Who’s in, who’s out, and what the NCAA bubble teams need to do this weekend

We look through the teams on the NCAA Tournament bubble and see who’s in, who’s out, and who needs to win to get to The Dance

There are more teams than ever competing for dance cards to the NCAA Tournament in 2020, and we’re here to help sort out who’s in and who’s out from the bubble.

For some help, we scoured the Internet for a Final Four of bracketologists to help us predict who will be heading to a first-and-second round city, and who’s hosting an NIT game.

Our selectors are:

The best way for Virginia to get off the bubble? Beat #5 Louisville on Saturday. The Cavaliers played their way back into contention with a big home win over FSU, and a win at the Yum! Center would solidify any doubters.

As for NC State, they’ll need to hold serve next week against Syracuse and BC just to stay in the mix at all before they get Duke and FSU for chances at a Q1 win.

American Conference

This league has cannibalized itself way too much, but even with a brutal buzzer beater loss at Tulsa, the Shockers look safe. A win at #25 Houston on Sunday would move them from pencil to Sharpie. Meanwhile, Memphis better pave USF, Cinci needs to hold off a spicy-of-late UConn in Storrs, and Tulsa needs to fry bigger fish than UCF if the middle of the league wants to keep their dreams alive.

We’ll know a lot more after next Saturday, when VCU travels to Richmond for a spot on the “maybe” side of the bubble, with the loser possibly falling off completely. But this Saturday VCU needs to beat Davidson at home, Richmond should pave Fordham, and Rhode Island gets a chance to really solidify their case on Tuesday at No. 6 Dayton. That would lock them in for good.

Big 12

The Sooners would like to avoid Dayton, and a win Saturday against No. 13 West Virginia in Norman would likely do the trick for now. Meanwhile the Longhorns might be playing for Shaka Smart’s job this weekend against two really tough opponents: Texas Tech Saturday, and No. 1 Baylor on Monday, both in Austin. Even a split here would really help their chances.

Big East

The Muskies get an occasionally-feisty Providence to come to Cincinnati on Saturday, and they’ll need a win to stay looking up. Meanwhile Georgetown is still in this article for now, and will be next week as long as they roll a very bad DePaul Saturday. But they’ll need to avoid looking ahead to #19 Butler at home on Feb. 15th, which could play them back into contention.

Big Ten

When your league’s regular season decides if you’re getting 10 or 12 teams in the NCAA Tournament, the good news is there’s plenty of opportunities to play yourself into a dance card. Richard Pitino and Minny head to Happy Valley to face No. 22 Penn State Saturday, while Purdue goes to Assembly Hall to face a upper-bubbly Indiana, where they will not be warmly received by their in-state rivals

PAC 12

This league: it’s still bad! Stanford gets a chance to improve its case Saturday at No. 24 Colorado, but a loss there wouldn’t hurt too bad. Losing to Arizona State at home next Thursday would, but Bobby Hurley’s Sun Devils need that game to get back on the bubble.

SEC

Arky needs to flatten Mizzou Saturday in Columbia, and stealing one at Tennessee for a Q1 win on the road Thursday might give them enough credits to graduate to the bracket. And there is no margin for error with MSU: they need to club Vandy at home and their rivals Ole Miss on Tuesday to stay on track.

The Others

Yale gets Harvard today, but they’re out of places to grab a Q1 win the rest of the season. And since they don’t have any of those, they should probably win out (or at least until they face Princeton) so they host the Ivy Tournament. Utah State gets a tricky pair with Boise St. at home Saturday and Colorado State in Ft. Collins Tuesday, but also with no margin for error at all.

Northern Iowa is probably safe if they win out in the MWC regular season, which will be a nice insurance policy in case they don’t win the conference tournament. They get Drake and Illinois State (both very bad!) at home Saturday and Wednesday.
