There’s not a ton of college basketball games on tap this Sunday, but for teams attempting to stay on the right side of the bubble, it’s a very big day.
The Wichita State Shockers seemed pretty safe, but have dropped two in a row (at Tulsa, vs. Cincinnati), two shots at a quality win they really could have used to solidify their case as an NCAA Tournament team. They’re safely in the tournament right now, but if they can’t pick up another scalp or two against teams in the Q1 range, that might change. It’s a big test for Erik Stephenson and Gregg Marshall today vs. the Houston Cougars at home, and though they’re certainly not out of it with a loss, the opportunities for key wins are much fewer.
Meanwhile farther north in the Central Time Zone, the Marquette Golden Eagles probably have less to worry about than the Shockers. They’re 16-6 with Q1 wins over Villanova, Purdue, and Xavier, and Markus Howard is one of the most underrated players in the country. But the schedule is about to get tougher, and it starts with the Butler Bulldogs in Fiserv Forum today. BU is coming in pretty hot, with a dramatic buzzer beater over Villanova by Kamar Baldwin keeping them in the Top 25 no matter the result today.
