Laura Dern wins her first Academy Award 28 years after her first nomination, and as a huge favorite for her portrayal as a divorce attorney in Marriage Story.

Laura Dern had been nominated for two Oscars previously, but was never considered the favorite to win before tonight. But her work as Nora Fanshaw, the divorce attorney for Scarlett Johansson’s Nicole, made it it is no surprise she wins the Best Supporting Actress statuette at the 92nd Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Dern’s work as the hard-driving yet sympathetic attorney was seen as empowering and captivating, and her long career and track record of success certainly helped her pick up the trophy. She opened with -1000 odds at DraftKings Sportsbook, which fell as low as -3335 on February 5th. She was -2500 before the ceremony, and there was little doubt as to who was winning this award.

Ironically her Marriage Story co-star Scarlett Johansson was also her co-nominee in this category for her work in Jojo Rabbit, and Margot Robbie had a late surge with the oddsmakers getting her down to +1200. But it was Dern’s night to be honored for a great film and an outstanding career.
