Odds to win the Big South Conference tournament

The Winthrop Eagles are slightly favored, but can another team knock them off for an NCAA Tournament bid?

The Big South Conference is led by the Radford Highlanders, who are hosting for the tournament from the quarterfinals on as the No. 1 seed. But that doesn’t matter to the wagering community, who have installed the No. 2 Winthrop Eagles as the favored team.

Winthrop and Radford split their season series with each winning on the other’s home floor, and they are far and away the favorites in this league. unior point guard Carlik Jones for Radford is the best player in the league: he’s a 50-40-80 guy that averages 19.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. And those are numbers you don’t see a lot of in mid-major college basketball.

Radford will draw Charleston Southern, led by Phlandrous Fleming, in the quarterfinals. Did we write that sentence just to let you know there’s a very good basketball player named Phlandrous Fleming in this tournament? Absolutely. Also Winthrop will take on USC Upstate in the opening round.

A team to keep an eye on however is Gardner-Webb, who won this tournament last year. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have won six of their last seven, including wins over both Radford and Winthrop.
