The International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Organizing Committee announced last week that the 2020 Summer Olympics would be postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The committees were looking to postpone them no more than a year, and we have our first report on a likely replacement schedule. Former AP Olympics reporter Steve Wilson is reporting the Tokyo Games have been rescheduled to July 23rd through August 8th of 2021.
The Games were scheduled to start July 24th of this summer, but as the coronavirus pandemic has grown, it became apparent the Games would need to be postponed. Numerous national organizing bodies and athletes were submitting letters requesting this happen. The United States’ Track & Field and Swimming organizing bodies submitted letters to the US Olympic Committee to requests postponement. Then, early last week the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees said they would not send any athletes to Tokyo.
The IOC announced the games would still be Tokyo 2020, just taking place in 2021.
