Video: Sean Payton says this is Drew Brees’ last season

Sean Payton appears to be the first person to state 2020 is Drew Brees’ last season. We break down the coach’s comments.

The New Orleans Saints signed quarterback Drew Brees to a two-year contract in mid-March, with two voidable years on the end of the deal. It suggested Brees was going to play two more years and that would be it.

It might now only be one more year of Brees. Saints head coach Sean Payton appeared on ESPN’s Get Up program and was asked about Taysom Hill’s role in the offense. When talking about what Hill can do as a quarterback, Payton said of Brees, “He’s announced he’s coming back for his final season.”

Brees has not said this publicly, and it remains to be seen the next time we’ll hear publicly from him amidst the social distancing going on. Brees’ contract included a $23 million bonus and has cap hits of $23.65 million and $36.15 million the next two years. The Saints have some contract decisions to sort out, and carrying a huge dead money hit in 2021 would not exactly be ideal.

This will be a situation to track, particularly while we await some kind of confirmation on this from Brees. If you’re in a dynasty league, I wouldn’t quite yet go unloading the QB, but it’s something to consider if you don’t think you’ll otherwise have a super competitive roster in 2020.
