Hampton shocks Radford to advance to advance in Big South Championship Game

An absolute stunner in the Big South semifinals, as the No. 1 seed gets blown out at home

Behind 32 points from senior Jermaine Marrow, the No. 5 Hampton Pirates beat the No. 1 Radford Highlanders 86-78 on Friday night in Radford, Virginia.

Hampton was a 10 point underdog at tip-off, and was +420 on the money line. Marrow combined with sophomore Ben Stanley to score 58 of the Pirates 86 points on the evening.

It was a waste of a tremendous game by junior Carlick Jones of Radford, the Big South Player of The Year who scored 33 points and had four rebounds in the loss. To blow the path to the championship on your home floor before even getting to play for the title is a tough pill to swallow for the team that was +110 to win the championship.

But anyone that put a taste on Hampton at +3000 before the tournament started is now one win away from a huge cash.

The Pirates will now face the No. 2 Winthrop Eagles, who defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 78-66 in the other semifinal. That game will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Winthrop’s home floor, as the highest-remaining seed hosts the championship game in the Big South Championship.
