The NHL and the Washington Capitals are hosting a Twitch stream to raise money for COVID-19 relief that will pit Alex Ovechkin vs. Wayne Gretzky in a battle of generational talents on NHL20. The head-to-head between The Great One and The Great 8 will be the first attempt by the NHL to get into the streaming stratosphere, similar to how other leagues have approached the break. Here’s what you need to know.

So this is Ovechkin vs. Gretzky in a best-of-3 format. The press release doesn’t specify if it’s actually Ovechkin and Gretzky playing each other in NHL20 but I guess that’s what we’re getting? Okay, sweet. Ovi and Gretzky will be able to interact over XBox One during the event.

Ovechkin is the captain of the Capitals and one of the greatest goal scorers of all-time. Gretzky is the greatest hockey player who ever lived, winning four championships with the Edmonton Oilers from 1983-1988. Ovi led the Capitals to their first Cup a few seasons ago, and currently leads the NHL in goals with 48. He ranks eighth all-time in goals scored with 706 in 15 seasons in the NHL. Gretzky is the all-time leader in goals scored with 894 over 21 seasons.
