The 2020 MLB season could go many different ways depending on multiple factors surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, but, we still might get a season of some sort. We can’t go with win totals like we have in the past, as the season will be shortened even in the best case scenario, but we can bet on win percentages. You can find the over/unders for MLB win percentages at DraftKings Sportsbook.
The 2019 season, for comparison, had the Houston Astros lead the league in win percentage at 66 percent while their 2020 over/under is set at 58.5 percent (third-highest). While the Tigers had the worst win percentage at 29.3 percent and are set at 35.5 percent (second-lowest) this season.
Three over bets
Chicago White Sox, Over 52 percent
The White Sox made some strong moves to speed up their rebuild, as they added catcher Yasmani Grandal, pitcher Dallas Keuchel, Edwin Encarnacion, pitcher Gio Gonzalez, and pitcher Steve Cishek. Last season they had a .450 percent win percentage, as they won just 72 games, so they’ll need to make a real surge with their new players to get there, but with Tim Anderson, Lucas Giolito and rookie Luis Robert and a nice young group to go with those veterans, there is a great chance they move up the pecking order.
Los Angeles Dodgers, Over 62.5 percent
To hit this over the Dodgers would need to win 102 games in a normal regular season. With the addition of Mookie Betts to an already stacked lineup and strong pitching rotation, that shouldn’t be much of a problem for the World Series favorites who won 106 games last season. The NL West remains a weak division after the Dodgers and will likely fight amongst themselves while L.A. runs away with the division by a large margin once again.
New York Yankees, Over 61.5 percent
The Yankees won 102 games last season despite facing multiple injuries. That’s a .636 win percentage and upgrading their average rotation with the best free agent available, Gerrit Cole, is going to help immensely. There is some worry about all of their spring training injuries, but the delay caused by the coronavirus will likely help them a lot, as a majority of their players, including Giancarlo Stanton, will have time to heal before the season gets back up and running.
Three under bets
Colorado Rockies, Under 45 percent
The Rockies did nothing this offseason after putting up a .438 win percentage in 2019 (71 wins). They did run their best player through the ringer, giving Nolan Arenado an extension with promises of building up talent and then shopped him around for a trade, which they didn’t complete. So, their top player isn’t going to be happy and they added nothing to a a team that won just 43 percent of their games last season. Punch that under.
Baltimore Orioles, Under 35 percent
The Orioles, who won 33 percent of their games last season (54 wins), are in full on tank mode and their still falling, which means we won’t see any results this season. The team traded away their Johnathan Villar and Dylan Bundy, two of their best players, for prospects. Those prospects aren’t going to help this this season, so they will undoubtedly be worse without Bundy and Villar.
Boston Red Sox, Under 52 percent
The Red Sox were led by financial concerns more than baseball concerns when letting MVP Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price go to the Dodgers after a season where they won just 84 games with a 52 percent win percentage. Thinking this team can equal their 2019 season without Betts and Price would mean they also added some depth, but they didn’t. Add in that they lost their manager Joey Cora to the sign-stealing scandal and fired GM Dave Dombrowski while the Yankees signed Gerrit Cole and their chances of a winning percentage look tough in 2020.
