How the race order will be set for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600

NASCAR runs its Memorial Day Coca-Cola 600 this weekend. We break down how the race order will be determined.

UPDATE: Qualifying has begun. We are tracking the full results here.

NASCAR returns to action on Sunday for the annual Memorial Day Coca-Cola 600. The race takes place at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with the start time set for 6 p.m. ET. and airing on FOX.

This race will also mark the first NASCAR race of the restarted season to include traditional qualifying. Last Sunday’s Real Heroes 400, the first Cup Series race of the restarted season, set order based on owner points and a random draw. The Toyota 500 this past Wednesday used the results of the Real Heroes 400, with the top 20 positions inverted from the top 20 finishing order.

This weekend we get traditional qualifying, but on the same day as the race. NASCAR qualifying is normally at least the day prior, but the Coca-Cola 600 will run qualifying at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday for health and safety reasons.

UPDATE: The race order has been set in qualifying. Kurt Busch has claimed the pole by .009 seconds over Jimmie Johnson.
