UPDATE: Jadon Sancho won’t start for Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich today

20-year-old phenom Jadon Sancho is still being listed as questionable for today’s massive derby. Is this gamesmanship or a legitimate calf issue?

UPDATE 11:40 a.m.: Sancho will not start for Borussia Dortmund today. Mats Hummels will start at centerback. Sancho has come off the bench to play in the first two games since the restart.

When a player is potentially a nine-figure transfer candidate in the offseason, it makes sense that a club would be cautious with his health.

But when that player is about to face their rival in a game that might determine the fate of the domestic championship this season, you’d think his status wouldn’t be in question. However that’s where we are regarding Borussia Dortmund striker Jadon Sancho today.

Goal.com reports that BVB boss Lucien Favre has stated that Sancho isn’t certain to start against their rivals for the trophy in Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich. “He’s only been training with the team for 10 days. That is not much,” Favre said. “I can’t say for sure if he will play on Tuesday.”

But with the fate of the trophy in the balance this could very likely all be gamesmanship by Dortmund and Favre. Players like Sancho want to perform on the biggest stage, and despite the recent outstanding play of Thorgan Hazard, it is Sancho that gives Die Schwarzgelben the best chance at a needed victory today.

Dortmund are four points adrift of Bayern entering today’s play with seven matches remaining for both sides.

Sancho has come on as a substitute in the two matches since the restart of the Bundesliga season, combining for 36 minutes and an assist against Schalke and Wolfsburg. A calf injury during the break has kept him from full fitness.

Also Mats Hummels defender might be available to face his old club after recovering from an Achilles injury. His physicality might be helpful in keeping legendary Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski from his scoring ways in the biggest match of the year.
