NASCAR is adjusting qualifying for its next five stops. We break down how the rules will work.

NASCAR continues with its restarted season, but they have made notable adjustments to qualifying. The Xfinity Series and Truck Series have both stuck exclusively to determining race order without qualifying. The Cup Series had same-day qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600, but has otherwise used random draw based on owner points or previous race results to sort out race order.

On Wednesday, NASCAR announced its plans for the next five cities where they will host races. Through at least June 21st, race order will be determined by a random draw based on current standings. That covers races across all three circuits in Bristol, Atlanta, Martinsville, Homestead-Miami, and Talladega. NASCAR has not updated its schedule following June 21st at Talladega.

The breakdown of how that impacts each series is as follows.

Cup Series

  • Positions 1-12: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 13-24: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 25-36: Random draw from charter teams in those positions in owner points
  • Positions 37-40: Open teams in order of owners points

Atlanta: Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500

Xfinity Series

  • Positions 1-12: The first 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up Eligibility will be assigned starting positions 1st – 12th using a random draw.
  • Positions 13-24: The next 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up eligibility will be assigned starting positions 12th- 24th using a random draw.
  • Starting positions 25-36: The next 12 NXS Teams based on the Adverse Conditions Line Up eligibility will be assigned starting positions 25th -36th using a random draw.
  • Any vehicles that are eligible for the Event in positions 37th – 40th will be assigned starting positions based on their order of eligibility.

The one exception is for the June 14th race at Homestead. There are two Xfinity races in two days there, so the second race lineup will be as follows:

  • Positions 1-15: Invert the top 15 from the June 13 race at Homestead
  • Positions 16-40: In finishing order from the June 13 race at Homestead, followed by new entries
