We’re back for another day of the Korea Baseball Organization, and on to the second series of the year for each team. The first three-game series wrapped up Thursday morning, with the Lotte Giants and NC Dinos currently atop the standings at 3-0.
The KBO is broadcasting bright and early, with one game on ESPN each day this first week. Moving forward, Tuesday through Friday games are at 5:30 a.m., Saturdays are at 4 a.m., and Sundays are at 1 a.m. All five games are scheduled for 5:30 a.m. ET. Friday morning. ESPN will air the Kia Tigers vs. Samsung Lions, with Jon Sciambi and Eduardo Perez calling the game.
Plenty will change over the remaining 141 games, but we’re starting to get a better handle on some of these teams. The Giants and Dinos have looked relatively impressive thus far. Arguably the most important thing to note heading into the first weekend is how bad pitching staffs drop off. Most teams have a decent or good first starter, some teams have a solid No. 2, but very few teams have much going behind that as of yet.
Through the first two days of the season, three of ten games went over the DraftKings Sportsbook run total. On Thursday, all five games went over the total. As we head into the weekend, it’s hard to see much of the pitching getting better. There will be some surprises. For example, the KT Wiz send out Hyeong Jun So (sometimes listed as So Hyeong Jun), an 18-year old making his professional debut. He threw six innings of one-run ball in an April preseason game against Hanwha. Who knows what to make of it, but it’s one data point to consider.
If you’re looking for familiar names, Drew Gagnon is taking the hill for the KIA Tigers, while Tyler Wilson is starting for the LG Twins. They aren’t exactly name brands, but might be familiar to Mets or Orioles fans.
Here are the odds, totals, and run lines for May 8, 2020 in the KBO, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Below that is a table filled with current records for each team’s performance on the money line, the run line, and for run totals. We also offer up the pythagorean theorem for each team’s runs scored vs. runs allowed to help us better understand each team’s performance.
