The NHL is planning on starting training camp around the middle of July with hopes to return some time in late July or August. The Stanley Cup Playoffs will essentially get eight teams added to the field, making it 24 teams competing for the Cup. It’s going to be an exciting finish for hockey in the ‘Chel and because of the format change, the money is going all over the place. DraftKings Sportsbook sent us over some betting splits for the Stanley Cup and here’s how things shake out:
2020 NHL Championship betting splits
Team | Odds | % Handle | % Bets |
---|---|---|---|
Team | Odds | % Handle | % Bets |
COL Avalanche | +800 | 49% | 50% |
NY Rangers | +4300 | 15% | 7% |
PHI Flyers | +1000 | 7% | 5% |
PIT Penguins | +1600 | 6% | 6% |
BOS Bruins | +650 | 5% | 6% |
CHI Blackhawks | +7500 | 3% | 4% |
TB Lightning | +650 | 2% | 3% |
WSH Capitals | +900 | 2% | 2% |
TOR Maple Leafs | +2900 | 1% | 2% |
STL Blues | +1100 | 1% | 2% |
I mean, right off the bat ... the New York Rangers are the second-most bet on team by both handle and betting percentage. Even crazier is the Avalanche being at nearly 50% — which likely has something to do with Colorado opening up Sportsbook recently. So the NY market, the PA market with the Penguins and Flyers are both well represented in these splits.
The Rangers to win the Cup is a little nutty but anything is possible in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York has a roster riddled with young talent and its anchored by veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. If The King can gain some momentum and get hot, the Rangers have as high a ceiling as any in the postseason.
I still think it’s odd the past two Stanley Cup champions aren’t getting more love. The Blues and Capitals both have decent odds to win the Cup at +1100 and +900, respectively. Both have basically the same rosters from those playoff runs and are well rested. Both know what it takes to win it all, so both would appear to be decent bets.
