9:15 p.m. UPDATE: Mariya Agapova wins by submission (rear naked choke) at 2:42 of the first round. After she caught Cifers with a kick to the head to stun her, Agapova was able to secure a body triangle, and then locks in a rear naked choke.
3:10 p.m. UPDATE: DraftKings Sportsbook posted their latest fight day betting splits. The experts are backing the heavily favored Agapova (-360), and the betting public is following. 86 percent of handle and 78 percent of total bets are on Agapova.
On a fight card full of chaos, Mariya Agapova vs. Hannah Cifers will fight tonight at UFC Fight Night on ESPN in Las Vegas. Agapova was was originally scheduled to battle Melissa Gatto, but the Brazilian Gatto can’t get to the USA due to travel restrictions along with other several other fighters from her country.
Cifers fought just two weeks ago at strawweight in the same venue, losing Mackenzie Dern via kneebar at 2:36 of the first round. As a good soldier on the UFC roster, she moved up 10 lbs. to flyweight and fights again just two weeks later. If she went home to Wake Forest, North Carolina or just stayed in Las Vegas we don’t know, but she comes in as an underdog that’s been made worse by bettors. She’s 10-5 in her career, and 2-3 in the UFC, but that shouldn’t be held against her tonight by Dana White.
The 23-year-old Agapova comes from combat sports-mad Kazakhstan and is making her UFC debut. She lost in Dana White’s Contender Series to Tracy Cortez in July of last year via decision, but has two first-round stoppages in Invicta since to earn full-roster status beginning tonight. The American Top Team member out of Florida is 8-1 as an MMA pro.
Here are the latest odds at DraftKings Sportsbook for Mariya Agapova vs. Hannah Cifers:
Mariya Agapova: Opened -230, now -305
Hannah Cifers: Opened +180, now +235
