My Top 5 Dark Horse Plays
Whether you are looking for a team to bet on to show off your out-of-the-box basketball knowledge, or if you’re just looking for something new or flashy to ride with, the conversation starts with these five teams on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Houston Rockets (+1300): This logic may not be for everybody, but the Rockets are a dark horse in my book. It’s going to be difficult to beat out the Lakers or Clippers in the West, but if there’s one team that can pull it off, it’s Houston. James Harden and Russell Westbrook are an electrifying duo who average over 60 points per game combined. They’re capable of winning games just by themselves, but they’re going to need Eric Gordon, P.J. Tucker, Robert Covington, and the rest of the supporting cast to step up if they want a shot at glory. As we’ve seen for the past several years, just one or two superstars is not enough for Houston to get it done. Regardless, I really like the Rockets at +1300 if you’re somebody who doesn’t trust either of the two L.A. teams.
Philadelphia 76ers (+2800): The Sixers are the most confusing and inconsistent team in the NBA. Most days, they’re a bettor’s nightmare because you have no idea whether you’ll get the elite team with an overpowering starting five, or the skeleton of a long overdue rebuilding franchise. With that being said, if we’re talking about overlooked teams to take a shot on, Philly is one of them. When they’re at full potential and full health (which isn’t often) they can be considered in the discussion for the best team in the East. If you’re one of those people who likes to root for what can happen when all the stars align, Philly is your squad.
Miami Heat (+3000): If you want to bet on the new guy, look no further than South Beach. The Heat are a very young team. Outside of their leader Jimmy Butler, there’s not much playoff experience. That’s not a slight to their talent, though. Bam Adebayo has had a massive breakout season, making his first All-Star game. Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro have emerged onto the scene as rookies. And Duncan Robinson is living every sports fan’s dream: playing in the NBA as a former Division 3 college athlete. Believe it or not, the Heat are currently the 4th seed. For me, they fall under the “sneaky good” category because they could realistically win any game they’re in. I think +3000 is a great price to let one ride here.
Indiana Pacers (+10000): Indiana flew extremely under the radar this year due to Victor Oladipo missing most of their games. Even without their star player, the Pacers still managed to achieve the 5th best record in the East thus far. First time All-Star Domantas Sabonis has been their focal point up to this point, averaging 18 points and 12 rebounds. This is also a team whose rotation can run 10 players deep at times, with guys like T.J. Warren (their leading scorer), Malcolm Brogdon, and Jeremy Lamb playing significant roles. Assuming they get a fully healthy Oladipo back, the Pacers are a true dark horse team that could make some noise.
Dallas Mavericks (+4000): Okay, now let’s start having some fun. The Mavs are in no way a complete team. They’re inconsistent and lack the dynamic depth that most of the other West playoff teams have. However, they also have the number three offense in the league. And they have Luka Doncic. With Luka at the helm, Dallas is capable of beating anyone. The question is whether or not they can perform on a consistent basis in a 7-game series. If you’re one of those bettors who likes to root for the fairytale winners, I think Dallas is worth it at +4000. Heck, Dirk helped them do it in 2011, so why not?
Bonus team: New Orleans Pelicans (+12500): Did I say let’s start having some fun? The Pelicans have work to do in Orlando as they’re not even in the playoffs right now. To them, their playoffs have already started. On the bright side, that means they could come out of the gates firing and (assuming they then make the playoffs) be in full swing once the postseason starts. The Pelicans have a lot of young talent like Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Lonzo Ball, but they haven’t gotten the chance to play together that much due to injuries. On-court chemistry will be a huge obstacle for them. So not only are you betting on them to run through teams like the Lakers or Nuggets or Bucks on the way to a championship, but you’re also betting on them to make the playoffs and to figure out how to play with each other on the court. If you’re anything like me and like to throw some change on a longshot just for the fun of riding it out, New Orleans may be the way to go.
