The tournament this week will be the Rocket Mortgage Classic (RMC) at Detroit Golf Club located in Detroit, Michigan. Only Florida and California have more golf courses than Michigan in the United States. The Buick Open, a staple on the PGA Tour, was held here from 1958 to 2009 and last year’s RMC was the first PGA Tour event since then. Some of the past winners of the Buick Open include Tiger Woods (3), Vijay Singh (3) and Kenny Perry (2).
This will be the second year Detroit Golf Club will be hosting a tournament on the PGA Tour, so we only have one past winner, Nate Lashley, who shot two rounds of 9-under par (63) on Thursday and Saturday en route to his first win on Tour. The top 5 ranked golfers will not be in attendance for the first time since the PGA Tour’s return from the COVID-19 shutdown and the overall field is not as strong as it has been over the past three tournaments.
Harold Varner III to Win +7000 | Top 10 +550
He’s been one of the best iron players since the shutdown, gaining an average of 1.4 strokes, which ranks him sixth over the past 12 rounds. We’ve seen him stack up a ton of birdies over the past few weeks and shot all four rounds in the 60s at TPC River Highlands. He’s also done very well on Donald Ross courses Tee-to-Green ranking 18th over his past two dozen rounds.
Si Woo Kim to Win +9000 | Top 10 +650
As many golf (or Si Woo) fans know, this could end in either complete euphoria or utter disaster, there’s no in-between. He’s missed four straight cuts before his 11th place finish last week, proving the aforementioned theory accurate. When Kim’s hot, he’s one of the best ball-strikers and closers in the game. He gained 8.4 strokes Tee-to-Green last week and we get him back on his preferred bentgrass greens, which may alleviate some of his putting woes of late.
Lanto Griffin Top 20 +450
He just missed another top 20 last week, finishing T24 with a mediocre Sunday. He’s proven that his game is good enough to win and even when it’s not firing every round, he’s still capable of grabbing a top 25. If you’re feeling bullish, Lanto is at +12500 to win, and even though he’s already punched his ticket to the Tournament of Champions this season, he missed the cut in his two previous starts before The Travelers. He’s also one of my favorite DraftKings plays this week as well.
