How the public is betting leader after day 1 of the Rocket Mortgage Classic

The Rocket Mortgage Classic tees off on Thursday in Detroit. Here’s how bettors are viewing first round performance.

The PGA Tour kicks off its Detroit tournament on Thursday at 6:45 a.m. with the the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic. The tournament was originally rescheduled the week after Memorial Day weekend, but was moved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Detroit course is built for the longer drivers, so it is no surprise DraftKings Sportsbook has installed Bryson DeChambeau as the favorite to win the tournament (+650) and lead after the first round (+1600). And it is not surprising the betting public is backing DeChambeau in a big way. 18% of total handle on the outright winner is on the big boy, while 10% of total handle on the leader after round 1 is on him. After turning up looking like he spent all quarantine lifting weights, the public is backing DeChambeau.

Here is a look at the top 14 most bet golfers for leading the tournament after round 1. We get a lot of notable favorites, with Will Gordon the longer shot at +8000 getting some love. He’s coming off a third place finish at the Travelers Championship, including the second best score on the final day. For a course built for the long ball, he ranks 31st in driver distance.’

Bryson Dechambeau (+1600): 10% handle, 6% bets
Sungjae Im (+3300): 6% handle, 4% bets
Viktor Hovland (+3300): 5% handle, 4% bets
Rickie Fowler (+4500): 4% handle, 3% bets
Patrick Reed (+3300): 3% handle, 4% bets
Kevin Na (+4500): 3% handle, 3% bets
Tony Finau (+4000): 3% handle, 2% bets
Tyrrell Hatton (+2200): 3% handle, 3% bets
Will Gordon (+8000): 3% handle, 4% bets
Webb Simpson (+2200): 3% handle, 3% bets
Harold Varner III (+6000): 3% handle, 3% bets
Hideki Matsuyama (+3300): 3% handle, 3% bets
Doc Redman (+4500): 3% handle, 3% bets
Scottie Scheffler (+4500): 2% handle, 2% bets

If you want to go for another +8000 longshot not getting much support, consider defending champion Nate Lashley. He’s missed the cut in five straight tournaments, but don’t forget he dominated his way to a 6-stroke victory last year. He had the lowest score in the first and third rounds, and the seventh lowest score in the second round. Even with a final round 70, he cruised.

Here is a full list of odds for who will lead the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the close of the first round.
