A pair of middleweights looking for a shot at Israel Adesanya’s championship belt step into the octagon as the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday when #1 Robert Whittaker faces #5 Darren Till on Fight Island as part of UFC on ESPN 14 this Saturday, July 15th.
Whittaker is 20-5 in MMA, but his loss to Adesanya in his first legal title defense after beating former champion Yoel Romero twice cost him the strap. Prior to that loss, he had won nine straight fights in the UFC, building up a reputation as one of the best pound-for-pound competitors in the sport.
Whittaker looks to avenge the knockout loss to Adesanya in his native Australia as soon as possible, but will need to face Till to stay the top contender. He fights with flare and from his feet, averaging 4.77 strikes per minute and an 84% takedown defense.
Till is ranked #5, and looks to jump to the head of the line for a title shot with a victory. “The Gorilla” is 18-2-1 overall, 6-2-1 in the UFC, with his only losses coming to fighters that aren’t middleweights in Jorge Masvidal and Tyron Woodley. “The Gorilla” only lands 2.38 strikes per minute, but has 10 knockouts and two submissions in his 18 wins, though mostly in his pre-UFC career. The 27-year-old from Liverpool, England was submitted by Woodley at welterweight in his only chance at UFC gold in September of 2018.
