Iron Mike apparently is sorta back. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will face off against one-time pound-for-pound champ Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition fight on September 12th in Los Angeles.
Tyson announced a “Legends Only League” on Wednesday. If you visit the site linked, you’ll see a display for Tyson vs. Jones at Dignity Health Sports Arena. The fight is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET and will be available via PPV and an entertainment platform called Triller.
Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Tyson was going to fight Shannon Briggs in a bareknuckle bout for a start-up bareknuckle fighting organization. That proved to be false with the promoter for the organization simply trying to drum up some interest and free press.
This, however, appears to be entirely legit given Tyson’s own tweet about it. Tyson recently turned 54 and has not fought since a 2005 loss to Kevin McBride. He retired with a record of 50-6. Jones is 51 and last fought in 2018 when he beat Scott Sigmon via unanimous decision. Jones is 66-9 for his career.
Jones discussed the fight last month:
