Breaking down betting splits for NHL qualifying round

We take a look at where the handle and betting percentages are falling for each of the NHL’s qualifying round matchups.

The NHL, like many sports leagues, is attempting to get back to the 2019-20 season in any way possible. We’re getting closer to a return with the qualifying round to kick off the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s a format like we’ve never seen before, pitting 16 teams against each to decide who will advance to the playoffs. DraftKings Sportsbook has some interesting betting splits we can go over for each of the qualifying round series.

Right off the bat, two series stick out. The first is Penguins-Canadiens, where the Pens are seeing a heavy percentage of the handle and bets to take down the Canadiens. This isn’t too surprising considering both teams. Outside of Carey Price standing on his head all series, Montreal will have a tough time dealing with a fresh Penguins squad with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.

The other series is Rangers-Hurricanes. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but the Canes essentially have the same roster from last season’s Eastern Conference Final run. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton is expected to be ready and Carolina could also get Sami Vatanen back. So why is everyone funneling money on the Rangers? Oh wait, you’ve got a ton of Rangers fans in New Jersey, which is a big market for DKSB. Don’t let the numbers sway you.

Things are pretty cut-and-dry otherwise. The most even matchup in the bettors eyes in the Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs with the handle percentage nearly split 50-50 — CBJ has the slight edge, while the betting percentage favors the Leafs. The Coyotes-Predators series is a dead split at 50-50 with the Preds getting slightly more love in betting percentage.
