UPDATE: 6:33 p.m. The Mountain West makes it official.

Brett McMurphy of Stadium is reporting the Mountain West Conference has decided to suspend the 2020 college football season until at least the spring of next year.

The Mountain West Conference has canceled its football season this fall because of player health and safety concerns regarding COVID-19, sources told Stadium.

In a vote of league presidents Monday, the Mountain West became the second Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conference to cancel all of its fall sports, sources said.

The Mountain West will consider playing football in the spring, sources said.

The league is one of the most geographically diverse in college football, running from Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colorado all the way to the University of Hawai’i in Manoa. Always challenged for cash as a Group of Five league, the cancelation of guarantee games by Power Five schools affected budgets disproportionally in the league. When the Pac-12 chose not to play out-of-conference games in 2020, it make things even worse.
