How the Consumers Energy 400 race order will be set Sunday at Michigan

NASCAR is racing a doubleheader in Michigan this weekend, with races on Saturday and Sunday. We break down how the starting grid will be set for Sunday’s Consumers Energy 400, which will be shaped by results from Saturday’s FireKeepers Casino 400.

NASCAR is traveling to Michigan this weekend for a full show featuring one Truck Series race, one Xfinity Series race, and two Cup Series races. The Cup Series will run the FireKeepers Casino 400 on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET, airing on NBC Sports Network. A day later, the Consumers Energy 400 will run at 4:30 p.m. ET, also airing on NBC Sports Network.

NASCAR will not be running qualifying events for any of its races the remainder of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, random draw connected to owner points will determine the starting lineup for most remaining races. This weekend offers one of the exceptions.

The Saturday FireKeepers Casino 400 starting grid will use random draw based on owner points. However, Sunday’s Consumers Energy 400 race order will be determined by inverting the top 20 finishers at Saturday’s race, with the rest of the field from 21st on back filled out based on those finishers on Saturday.
