Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery’s status for Week 1 is up in the air. He was listed as questionable on the Bears’ injury report ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions because of a groin injury. Montgomery was limited in practice on Wednesday but was a full participant on Thursday and Friday. Chicago has limited depth at running back, so Montgomery’s health could have major fantasy football impact.
Fantasy football analysis: Bears RBs Tarik Cohen and David Mongtomery
Cohen was RB17 in standard leagues and RB11 in PPR leagues in 2018. He took a back seat to Montgomery in 2019, so he was only able to tally 64 carries for 213 yards. He still managed to haul in 79 receptions for 456 yards and three scores in a reserve role though. Ryan Nall only has two career carries for eight yards, so Cohen would likely assume the lion’s share of the snaps at running back should Montgomery be ruled out. Cohen is an affordable $4,900 in Sunday’s main slate on Draftkings.
Montgomery might not be worth rostering in DFS or starting in traditional fantasy if there’s any indication that his workload will be limited. He was RB24 in standard leagues last year despite ranking 13th in carries with 242. His $5,900 price tag isn’t worth it if he isn’t the bell cow, as he can’t contribute much as a pass catcher.
