What to do with Antonio Gibson in Week 1 fantasy football

Gibson is getting plenty of fantasy hype, but with Washington using a RB committee, is he worth starting this week?

Game day update: Washington deactivated Bryce Love, which is a boost for Antonio Gibson. JD McKissic will get passing down work and Peyton Barber could get some early work, but Gibson seems the best bet to get the most work in Week 1.

Adrian Peterson was a roster casualty in Washington this year. And with the veteran out of the way, most of us assumed that rookie Antonio Gibson would be the main beneficiary. Instead, head coach Ron Rivera labeled his team’s running back situation with that dreaded “c” word—committee.

Fantasy Football analysis: Washington Football Team, RB, Antonio Gibson

A third-round pick in this year’s draft, is just another guy on the depth chart at this point. Gibson has something that Peyton Barber, Bryce Love, and J.D. McKissic don’t have, and that’s unadulterated explosive upside.

The only question is when we’ll get to see him making the most of it on the field long enough to be worth fantasy consideration. Gibson may lose out on early down work to the others on the depth chart this week, perhaps longer. Where he could make a difference right out of the gate is on passing down, catching the ball, and blowing by defenders. A few big plays, and he’ll have separated himself from the rest of the pack.

But that’s an eventuality that doesn’t tell us much for this week. For now, Gibson looks like a decent flex play because of his playmaking ability. The downside is that until we know whether or not he’s going to get enough work, it’s going to be hard using him over an established running back on your fantasy rosters.

Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

Start Gibson if you have a flex spot this week.
