What to do with Phillip Lindsay, Melvin Gordon in Week 1 fantasy football

They’re not a committee, they’re “co-starters.” So what does that mean for fantasy purposes?

Here’s another two-headed running back threat to consider this week. It’s great for teams, but there’s word more despised in fantasy football that “committee.” The Broncos play host to the Titans this week for the season opener, no easy matchup. When they take the field, which of their two main running backs—Phillip Lindsay and Melvin Gordon—are going to shoulder more of the workload? And more importantly for fantasy purposes, is either player worth a spot in your lineup?

Gordon has been the more popular choice in fantasy football drafts. Expectations are high after Denver signed him to a two-year, $16 million deal in free agency this year. Hype around a big free agent signing makes it easier to overlook the fact that Lindsay is also pretty good, rushing for seven touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards.

Denver’s offensive line gives any running back the potential to be productive, but the question remains which one of these two is the better option for fantasy purposes. Officially, the Broncos are listing them co-starters, and head coach Vic Fangio says both guys are going to get plenty of work. But that’s not much to go on for lineup decisions this week.

Gordon is probably a safer bet to get more playing time over the course of the season, but you’d better let it play out this week to see if the Broncos really do end up favoring one or the other.
