We’re through Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, and that means we’ve gotten a look at most of the league’s top defensive players. We’ll need a much bigger sample size to gauge who has a shot at winning Defensive Player of the Year, but there are some obvious frontrunners worth monitoring. We’ll go over some of the top betting options for the award on DraftKings Sportsbook here.
It’s not surprising to see that Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is the favorite at +700. He was +800 before Week 1, so he’s trending in the right direction. He might not have the best stats because of the how often he draws double teams, but he is one of the most impactful defensive players in the NFL. Donald finished Week 1 with four tackles, a sack and four quarterback hits against the Dallas Cowboys, who have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. The two-time DPOY could improve his odds in Week 2 by putting up gaudy numbers against a Philadelphia Eagles team that got throttled by the Washington Football Team on Sunday.
Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt trails Donald in the odds at +1000. He improved from his preseason mark of +1400 after despite only recording one tackle against the New York Giants in his 202 debut. he did manage to pick off Daniel Jones though. Watt finished second in last year’s voting, behind New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore and Arizona Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones. Watt is in his fourth NFL season and has finished inside the top 15 in sacks twice. He finished fourth in 2019 with 14.5.
Brothers Joey and Nick Bosa are both defensive ends tied for the third best odds at +1400. Joey has improved from +200 after tallying five tackles and a sack in the Los Angeles Chargers’ season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Nick odds haven’t budged since Week 1 concluded despite his six tackles and forced fumble for the San Francisco 49ers in their loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Bosa brothers have each won a Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and are chasing more impressive hardware.
Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack rounds out the top five at +1500 and hasn’t seen his odds move. The 2016 DPOY pressured Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford six times in Week 1 but only had four tackles to show for his performance. He’s relentless in his pursuit of big plays, but will need to get quality counting stats to win DPOY again after his low sack year in 2019. He’ll be up against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, and they boast one of the better offensive lines in football.
