Plenty of talented rookies made their NFL debuts over the last week, but most of the most impactful first years were on the defensive side of the ball. Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire had on of the most electric performances in the entire league in Week 1 and has cemented himself as the frontrunner for this season’s Offensive Rookie of the Year. We’ll go over the favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook here.
Edwards-Helaire had the second best odds at +300 ahead of Week 1, but improved his odds to +120 after rushing for a league-leading 138 yards and a score against the Houston Texans. The rookie got 25 carries for a Chiefs team that is usually focused much more on passing. If Kansas City thinks Edwards-Helaire is talented enough to let him set the tone on offense, he’ll easily win OROY. He’ll be tested against the Los Angeles Chargers’ elite defensive line in Week 2.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 Draft and the favorite to win OROY until Week 1 was through. His odds sunk from +250 to +400 after losing to the Chargers 16-13 in his season opener. Burrow didn’t have the best passing performance against one of the most well-rounded defensive units in football, but scored on a 23-yard touchdown run. He can improve his odds in Week 2 by putting up big numbers against a Cleveland Browns team that was dominated by Lamar Jackson through the air in Week 1.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has the third best odds got the biggest boost among favorites after all the season openers were over with. While he only ran the ball nine times for 22 yards in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, his odds have jumped from +900 to +700. Week 1 Starter Marlon Mack is out for the season, and that means Taylor will step into a feature back role. The versatile power back has little competition when it comes to running between the tackles and will be utilized in the passing game as well. The Colts aren’t close to matching the Chiefs offensively, but Taylor is one of the few options capable of catching Burrow. He’ll make his first start in Week 2 against a Minnesota Vikings team that lost their two best defensive lineman over the offseason. A statement game could do a lot for Taylor’s OROY chances.
