Diego Sanchez and Jake Matthews will take the octagon in a preliminary men’s welterweight bout for UFC 253 live at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi and available on pay-per-view.
Sanchez will be coming in as one of the oldest fighters in the UFC at 38-years-old with 43 bouts in his MMA career. He’ll be fighting for the second time in 2020 and fourth time in the last two years. Since 2017, Sanchez is 3-3 in UFC bouts.
Despite winning his last fight via disqualification, Sanchez has been brutally outhit his last few battles, losing on significant strikes a combined 100-32. He averages 2.73 strikes per minutes on 38 percent accuracy, but takes 2.95 per minutes on 56 percent defense accuracy. He’s quite comfortable on the ground, landing 1.57 takedowns per 15 minutes.
Jake Matthews takes this fight with 20 MMA bouts to his name, 13 being UFC contests. With a 16-4 record, Matthews is a mixed bag having won his last two fights via drastically different styles yet by unanimous decisions. And he enters as one of the biggest favorites on the card.
He had four takedowns and 17 fewer strikes against Emil Meek, yet outstruck Rostem Akman last October by 44. Matthews is versatile and can play either way, but it looks like he’ll have a better chance in a brawl and not on the ground. Matthews is 5-1 in his UFC fights dating back to 2017.
