How and what to watch for Florida vs. Ole Miss

The Gators take on the Rebels in one of two SEC games starting at noon ET to begin the conference’s season.

NCAA Football: Orange Bowl-Florida vs Virginia Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

One of the openers of the 2020 SEC football season is a cross-divisional as the #5 Florida Gators head to Oxford to take on the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Florida finally heads into a season under Dan Mullen with a solid starting quarterback. Kyle Trask took over for an injured Feleipe Franks early in 2019. He performed well, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards with 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Trask is now the starter, and Franks is now the quarterback at Arkansas. As perhaps the best quarterback in the SEC, Trask should be have his sights on getting back to the conference title game for the first time since 2016.

Ole Miss brought in Lane Kiffin, who spent the last three seasons at Florida Atlantic. One of the most, ahem, interesting people in college football, he’s known for his expertise on the offensive side of the ball. He is tasked with turning around a program that went 4-8 last season, had this happen to get previous head coach Matt Luke fired, and finished ninth in the SEC in scoring offense.

Despite being in the same conference, thanks to the rotation system of the SEC these two teams have played just once since the end of the 2008 season, a 38-10 win in 2015 for the Rebels under previous coach Hugh Freeze.

The Best Bet

Florida has the making of one of the best teams in the country in 2020. The Gators appeared to be just a quarterback away for years, but they have him now with Trask. It may take a while for Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss offense, so let’s go with the road favorites in the season opener. Ole Miss’ stadium will run at 25% capacity, we’ll still roll with the Gators on Saturday.

Pick: Florida -12.5
