How and what to watch for Texas vs. Texas Tech

Texas Tech is coming off a scare against Houston Baptist, while Texas hung 59 on UTEP. Where should you be betting heading into Saturday’s game?

The Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders will look to improve to 2-0 overall heading into their first Big 12 game of the season on Sept. 26.

Both teams had last weekend off after starting their season on Sept. 12. Texas took care of UTEP, which might be the worst FBS team in the country, 59-3 in its season opener. It’s difficult to take too much from this game, but Sam Ehlinger looked good, completing 25 of 33 passes for 426 yards and five touchdown passes. Eight Longhorns found the end zone in the victory.

For Texas Tech, the Red Raiders easily could’ve lost to Houston Baptist in their season opener but held on to win 35-33. Texas Tech put up an impressive 624 yards in the game but gave up 600 yards to Houston Baptist. That’s a bad sign for the defense heading into conference play. The Red Raiders allowed Houston Baptist’s starting quarterback Bailey Zappe to throw for 567 yards. That will need to be fixed if they want any shot to upset Texas on Saturday.

Texas won the last two games in this series including a 49-24 win at home in 2019.

Game Time/TV Channel/Streaming

Saturday’s game will start at 3:30 p.m. ET at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. This game will appear on FOX.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Texas (-18.5) vs. Texas Tech
Point Total: O/U 70 (-110)
Money line: Texas (-1000), Texas Tech (+600)

  • Texas is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 games against Texas Tech.
  • Texas is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games.
  • Texas Tech is 2-12 straight up in its last 14 Big 12 games.
  • Texas Tech is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven games.

The Best Bet

Texas should win this game fairly easily, but the Longhorns played up an down to its opponents in 2019. The 18.5 points is a little high, but there will be a ton of points scored in this one. Texas Tech’s defense likely won’t be as bad as it was against Houston Baptist, but giving up 600 yards of offense to an FCS team that lost six of its last seven games to fellow FCS opponents in 2019 is difficult to ignore especially going up against Ehlinger, who could be a Heisman contender this season.
