Is Texas back?
What we do know is the #8 Texas Longhorns came up clutch at the end of a 63-56 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday at Jones AT&T Field in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday.
The Longhorns scored the last 22 points of the game in the last 2:39 of regulation and overtime. They recovered an onsides kick, completed a two-point conversion, and avoided falling to an 18-point underdog in Lubbock.
In the most Big XII way to bring back the Big XII season, TTU quarterback Alan Bowman was 31/52 for 325 yards with five TD’s and three interceptions. The teams combined for 917 yards of offense, as well as five turnovers that led to 28 points. Or, you know, your typical Big XII game.
Texas’s Malcolm Epps recovered an onsides kick with 2:39 remaining and the Longhorns down 56-48, but quarterback Sam Ehlinger needed just six plays to go 42 yards to paydirt, and threw for the two-point conversion to tie it. In overtime Texas got the ball first and scored a touchdown via Ehlinger to Josh Moore from 12 yards out.
Texas Tech failed to score when Bowman floated his final interception of the day on 4th and 14, and another devastating loss for the fans in Lubbock came home to roost. There might not be a team in college football with more heartbreaking leads lost than TTU over the past decade.
For bettors, the over was a gift at 71, which was hit with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter. Many things are different about the 2020 college football season, but bookmakers being unable to make Big 12 lines high enough is not one of them.
