What to do with Devonta Freeman, Dion Lewis, Wayne Gallman in Week 3 fantasy football

Let’s try to sort out the Giants’ running back situation.

1st half update: Halfway through the game, Gallman leads the Giants with four carries. He has seven yards and one reception for two yards, Freeman has two carries for nine yards, and QB Daniel Jones has two carries for 19 yards. Dion Lewis has no carries and has been targeted once in the passing game.

Game time update: Jay Glazer is reporting the Giants will play Devonta Freeman about 30 percent of the offensive snaps in Week 3.

Game day update: Giants reporter Ryan Dunleavy tweeted that his bet to start on Sunday is Wayne Gallman. None is worth a start outside of the deepest of leagues, but keep it on your radar.

There’s a huge hole in the New York Giants lineup now that running back Saquon Barkley is out for the season with a torn ACL. Barkley’s absence also leaves fantasy leagues without one of the most reliable producers at the position. The question now is how does Big Blue fill the gap and what does that mean for fantasy lineups.

Fantasy Football analysis: Giants RBs Devonta Freeman, Dion Lewis, Wayne Gallman

In the wake of Barkley’s injury, the Giants added veteran running back Devonta Freeman off the street, signing him to a deal that could be worth as much as $3 million for the season. However, because he only joined the team on Tuesday, he’ll have some catching up to do to get in sync with the offense. Plus, he can’t practice yet because of COVID testing.

For now, this week at least, Dion Lewis is expected to be the main guy in the team’s backfield. Lewis has been productive throughout his eight-year career, but he’s never been in a high-volume, lead back role. In the coming weeks, you can expect Freeman and Wayne Gallman to share more of the workload, but until we know what that distribution looks like and if any one of the three players gets an edge over the others, it’s hard to recommend any of them. And with the 49ers on the schedule this week, you can pass on putting any of the three into your lineup.

Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

Sit Lewis, Gallman, and Freeman.
