Opening Lines for Week 5 of college football

Everyone playing in Week 5 has played at least one game already. Who will improve, and who showed all their cards already?

We now have more than half the teams in college football having played a game, with the Big Ten, Pac-12, MAC, and Mountain West still coming. But with the six leagues that are active all playing full schedules this weekend, there’s some great matchups in Week 5 that should hold plenty of appeal for both handicappers and fans.

The Ole Miss Rebels face the Kentucky Wildcats in a battle of teams that have a bit higher expectations, but have also struggled to get stops defensively. Lane Kiffin fell to Dan Mullen and the #6 Gators 51-35 last week, while UK lost to #7 Auburn 29-13 on The Plains. The Rebels Matt Corral was 22/31 for 395 yards and three touchdowns against a Gators defense that’s considered one of the best in the SEC, but he should have an easier test in Lexington on Saturday.

The TCU Horned Frogs finally get to play a football game after several cancelations when they take on the Texas Longhorns in a Big XII matchup. The Frogs had multiple warmup games canceled due to Covid-19, and lost at home to Iowa State 37-34 despite 400 yards passing and four touchdowns combined from quarterbacks Max Duggan and Matthew Downing. But 44 rushes for just 99 yards and two turnovers were the difference.

Texas pulled one out of the fire with remarkable aplomb against Texas Tech in a game they were left all but dead. It took a recovered onsides kick and two drives from quarterback Sam Ehlinger to rescue the season and any chance at the College Football Playoff.

The Boston College Eagles have started 2-0 and looked good under new coach Jeff Hafley, but they get their first real test with North Carolina Tar Heels coming to town. The Heels lost a game to Covid-19 last week as well, but opened with a 31-6 pasting of Syracuse behind quarterback Sam Howell. BC will catch double digits at home, and if fans are allowed they’ll be excited to see a team that has already knocked off Duke and Texas State with aplomb this season.
