Breaking down betting splits for Heat vs. Lakers NBA Finals Game 1 [UPDATE]

We go over how to watch the 2020 NBA Finals between Miami and Los Angeles on Wednesday, plus look at the betting lines and make a pick for Game 1.

The Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers start the 2020 NBA Finals on Wednesday with Game 1 in the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida. The Lakers got to the finals after a dominating run of 12-3 in the first three rounds. The Heat enter with the same record of 12-3 after getting past all three higher-seeded opponents. We’ve got a nice little narrative with LeBron James facing his former team and coach Erik Spoelstra. Jimmy Butler has a chance to take down the Kings and be viewed more as a top dog and less of a locker room cancer. Let’s get you ready for Game 1.

Game Time/TV Channel/Streaming

Game 1 on Wednesday will take place at 9:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted on ABC and will be streaming on fuboTV and YouTube TV.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds

Spread: Lakers -4.5
Over/Under: 217.5
Moneyline: Lakers (-195), Heat (+163 )

Update: Here are some betting splits via DraftKings Sportsbook as of this afternoon for Game 1. We’ve been tracking these splits since the lines came out on Sunday. After a lean toward the Heat that drove the spread down to 4.5 points, there’s been an uptick in bets on the Lakers, so it’s back to a 60-40 split against the spread. The over continues to see the most action while the ML bets are getting close together at around 60-40 in terms of betting percentage.

MIA Heat 4.5 29% 40% Over 217.5 82% 74% 163 40% 39%
LA Lakers -4.5 71% 60% Under 217.5 18% 26% -195 60% 61%

The Best Bet: Heat +5 (-109)

All playoffs long the Heat have been underdogs and more times than not, they’re covering the spread. It’s more of a product of the bubble — teams aren’t on the road or at home really, so you can’t move these lines too much. I think Miami is the toughest opponent the Lakers will see all postseason. The Heat have guys they can throw on LeBron (Butler, Andre Iguodala, Jae Crowder) and guys to throw on Anthony Davis (Bam Adebayo, Crowder). Other than the West Finals, the Lakers struggled in Game 1s. If you’re the Heat, you need to come out with much more intensity as the underdog than the Lakers. I’d like to think a Jimmy Butler led Heat team will do exactly that and could steal Game 1. With that said, I’ll take the points.
