Friday update: Jimmy Garoppolo is not practicing as the team gets going on Friday. He seems a longshot to play on Sunday.

Thursday PM update: The 49ers are back at practice on Thursday and Jimmy Garoppolo was not on the field to open the session, per Matt Barrows.

The San Francisco 49ers returned to practice on Wednesday and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains sidelined with his high ankle sprain, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Garoppolo injured the ankle in Week 2 against the Jets and missed last week’s game against the Giants. His status for Week 4 against the Eagles is unclear.

Nick Mullens replaced Garoppolo in the starting lineup and impressed in his start against the Giants. He completed 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards and a touchdown in a 36-9 route at MetLife Stadium.

The Eagles are struggling, sitting at 0-2-1 heading into Week 4. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Garoppolo would return to his starting role when he gets healthy — Shanahan said no scenario exists where that wouldn’t happen — but given how bad the Eagles have been and how well Mullens played in Week 3, the 49ers might not want to rush Garoppolo back.
