Horse racing’s biggest prize won’t have a winner this year, but Authentic runs from the gate to the wire in first for trainer Bob Baffert, who wins his sixth Kentucky Derby by 3⁄4 of a length. Authentic ran the race in 2:00.61 and edged out heavy favorite Tiz The Law to end the Triple Crown bid. Mr. Big News finished third and Honor A.P. finished fourth.
Authentic started in the 18th post position as far from the rail as possible, but was fearless in running from the front for the entire race, and was actually pulling away as he crossed the finish line.
There have been 13 Triple Crown winners in history, but none from 1978 until 2015. There won’t be a third in six years.

Authentic now has won five of six career starts, with his only loss a second to Honor A.P. in the Santa Anita Derby. His last win was by a nose at the Haskell at Monmouth Park by a nose over NY Traffic.
Since Authentic didn’t run at the Belmont, it sets up a potential revenge race for TTL and his connections at the Preakness Stakes, now scheduled for October 3rd at Pimlico. That battle between the best two three-year-olds in the world might also have Horse of The Year honors on the line.
