How the public is betting 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year

Aaron Donald is the favorite to win his third NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, but the money is being spent on other players heading into 2020.

The NFL Defensive Player of the Year award is currently held by cornerback Stephon Gilmore. He ended a five-year run of defensive linemen taking home the award between Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack, and J.J. Watt. Linebacker Luke Kuechly won the award prior, and while it’s been six straight seasons without a linebacker winning the award, linebackers have won it the most of any position.

Los Angeles Rams defensive end Aaron Donald is listed with the best futures odds for 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year heading into the season. He won the award in 2017 and 2018 but is tied for eighth among NFL players in percentage of handle. Despite having +700 odds to win it a third time, sports bettors are spending their money elsewhere.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard is seeing the highest percentage of handle with 15% and the most bets placed on him with 12% among all defensive players in the NFL. However, he isn’t viewed as highly by the oddsmakers at DraftKings Sportsbook. Leonard has the 13th highest odds at +3300.

Also seeing plenty of action is Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker TJ Watt. He is second in percentage of handle (13%) and percentage of bets (11%). TJ Watt is in a four-way tie with the second best odds at +1400 with Nick Bosa, Khalil Mack and his brother JJ Watt.

Despite having the second best odds and after winning the Defensive Player of the Year award three times in his career, JJ Watt is not among the top 10 in percentage of handle heading into 2020.

Stephon Gilmore of the New England Patriots won the award in 2019 but is not among the top 10 in terms of percentage of handle heading into this season. He is currently listed with the 10th best odds in the NFL at +2500.

The biggest longshot among the top 10 in percentage of handle is rookie edge rusher Chase Young of the Washington Football Team. He is tied for sixth with Mack, receiving 4% of the handle despite being listed with the 25th best odds to win the award at +5000.
