The 2020 NFL season is set to kick off Thursday, September 10. Bettors have been active and are placing future bets on who the next passing yards leader will be. A year ago, Jameis Winston finished the year on top with 5,109 yards. He was followed in the top five by Dak Prescott (4,902), Jared Goff (4,638), Philip Rivers (4,615), and Matt Ryan (4,466).
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes (+400) stands out as the favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook. He leads all players with 19 percent of the handle and has 14 percent of the total bets. The reigning Super Bowl MVP hasn’t led the league in passing yards before, but his dynamic offense has a ton of threats at wide receiver and a promising, versatile rookie running back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Kansas City’s offense could be better than it ever has been in 2020, and the public is backing it.
While Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn’t have the best odds at +1400, he’s only second to Mahomes in handle percentage (15). He’s even with Mahomes for the lead in percentage of total bets (14). His 2019 season was derailed by a back injury, but Marvin Jones Jr. and Kenny Golladay continued to thrive as one of the most productive wide receiver duos in the NFL. Few players attempt as many passes as Stafford, and that’s why he has a real shot at leading all signal callers in passing yards.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (+800) has the third best odds and only trailed Jameis Winston in passing yards last season. He has a pair of studs returning from last season out wide in Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup, and added CeeDee Lamb through the 2020 NFL Draft. Having two-time rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott at running back could make it hard for Prescott to compete though. His 10 percent of the handle ranks third among the public’s favorites so far.
The New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees (+2500) and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger (+2000) stands out as the public’s favorite longshots. Brees has led the NFL in passing yards seven times but saw his 2019 season cut short by a thumb injury. He has 8 percent of the handle and ranks third with 11 percent of the total bets. Roethlisberger led the league in passing yards two seasons ago and is looking to rebound from the elbow injury that brought a premature end to his 2019 season. He has 9 percent of the handle and 8 percent of the total bets.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the betting splits for the public’s favorites.
