The New Orleans Saints are likely to be without Drew Brees next season, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Brees hasn’t announced anything, so he could return, but Rapoport’s sources aren’t expecting that to happen, especially after a punctured lung, multiple fractured ribs ad . That would leave a gaping hole at the most important position on the team for the Saints.
We’ve seen Sean Payton take lesser talent at the quarterback position and win with it the last two seasons, but a full season without Brees is going to be a different story. This season when Brees missed time, Taysom Hill got the call as starter over Jameis Winston. That doesn’t mean Hill would get the call as starter in Week 1 next season though.
The Saints know that Hill isn’t a slam dunk heading forward, so they want to keep Winston as well, according to Rapoport. If that ends up to be true, we would very likely see Winston and Hill battle for the starting job in training camp.
