In the main event bout at lightweight for UFC 257, Conor McGregor will take on Dustin Poirier Saturday live from UFC Fight Island and available on ESPN+ PPV.
The 32-year-old McGregor enters the octagon with a professional fighting record of 22-4, and ranked 13th in the pound-for-pound rankings. He’s also ranked fourth in the lightweight rankings. “Notorious” McGregor last fought at UFC 246 in January 2020, where he defeated Donald Cerrone by TKO just 40 seconds into Round 1.
After that fight, McGregor surprisingly announced his retirement from the sport in June. But now he’ll be getting back into the octagon to face Poirier in a rematch from UFC 178 in June 2014. In the first rendition, McGregor defeated Poirier also by Round 1 TKO
McGregor will try to win on Saturday by landing significant strikes. He averages 5.43 strikes per minute, with an accuracy of 49 percent. But the veteran fighter absorbs 4.40 strikes per minute, while he defends against them at 55 percent.
As for Poirier, he walks into Saturday’s main event with a professional fighting record of 26-6 (1 NC). He is also ranked seventh in pound-for-pound rankings and ranked second in the lightweight division. The southpaw last fought in June at UFC on ESPN 12, where he defeated Dan Hooker by unanimous decision.
The 32-year-old mixed martial artist is an aggressive fighter, who will try to use grappling to his advantage. “The Diamond” has 1.46 takedowns per 15 minutes and a takedown accuracy of 35 percent in the octagon. He also does a tremendous job landing strikes at 5.57 per minute with 50 percent accuracy.
