How and what to watch for No. 12 Texas Tech vs. No. 14 West Virginia

Monday will bring a Big 12 men’s basketball matchup between No. 12 Texas Tech and No. 14 West Virginia. The Red Raiders had their three-game winning streak snapped by No. 2 Baylor in their last outing and will get a chance to stop the Mountaineers from winning a fourth straight contest.

Texas Tech (11-4, 4-3 Big 12) relies on their 5th-ranked adjusted defense to win games in what might be the toughest conference in college basketball. Georgetown transfer Mac McClung has added an offensive boost this season, averaging 16.3 points per game for a team that still has an eFG of just 49.1. But they concede just 86.9 points per 100 possessions, good for sixth in college basketball.

West Virginia (10-4, 3-3 Big 12) also isn’t exactly known for their scoring prowess, as they’re eFG is a paltry 47.1 and they make just 30.7% of their three-point attempts. But with an adjusted defensive efficiency of 17th in Division I, it’s mostly a lot of rebounding and defense for the Mountaineers. Sophomore guard Miles McBride averages 15.3 per outing to lead all scorers.

The Red Raiders weren’t far off from topping a Bears team that’s been head and shoulders above most college competition this year on Saturday. West Virginia nearly topped a top-five team in Texas as well in its last game, but these two teams are close to each other when it comes to raw ability that this game could go either way. With two teams this close to one another, there’s always plenty of value in an underdog bet.
