Leonard Fournette has increased his production — and his earning potential — as the 2020 season has worn on. He will look to put an exclamation point on his small-sample resurgence in Super Bowl 55 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The former first-round pick was cast off by the Jaguars at the end of August and picked up by the Bucs a week later. He spent most of this season playing second fiddle to Ronald Jones III. RoJo operated as Tampa Bay’s clear lead back through 14 weeks, but a broken pinkie finger, a case of COVID-19, and a strained quad took him out of a few games, opening the door for Fournette to prove his worth.
The LSU product scored five times over the Bucs past five games and gained more than 100 yards from scrimmage in two of the team’s three playoff games. Jones was healthy enough to play during the Divisional game in New Orleans and the NFC Championship game in Green Bay, but Fournette had clearly unseated him as the No. 1 RB by then. Fournette saw significantly more touches (39-23) and snaps (94-39) than Jones in those two contests. Fournette is the player Tampa Bay trusts more to be on the field for passing downs, so you should expect him to maintain that usage advantage when the Bucs take on the Chiefs’ turbo-powered offense.
