Why is Ronald Jones “So Two Thousand and Late”?

While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been on the ascent for the past seven weeks, Ronald Jones III’s involvement in their offense is descending.

Jones was an important cog in Tampa Bay’s offense for most of the year. He played well in front of Leonard Fournette through November, averaging better than an extra yard per carry and more than doubling his touches total. Jones’ most dominant performance came in Week 10 at Carolina, when he rushed for 192 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown.

But then Jones was beset by a bevy of maladies. The combination of a broken finger and a case of COVID-19 caused him to sit out Weeks 15 and 16. Although he returned for Week 17 — and out-touched Fournette, 12-7 — he was back on the bench for the Bucs’ playoff game in Washington because of an injured quad.

Jones suited up the past two weeks, but Fournette has seemingly taken control of this backfield. He has played 55 more snaps than Jones and out-gained him 181-78 in those two games. Jones has seen a receiving target in his last three games; Fournette was targeted 12 times in those games. That doesn’t bode well for Jones as the Buccaneers will probably have a pass-centric game plan in order to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl 55
