The Los Angeles Rams made an aggressive move to open their offseason on Saturday night, closing out a trade for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. The deal cannot become official — or even formally announced — until the new league year starts in March, but it’s effectively done. The Rams traded Jared Goff, two first round picks, and a third round pick to the Lions for Stafford.
There had been a report of mutual interest for Stafford and the Rams, and that appeared to drive this thing. Josina Anderson reported Washington made a better offer, but Stafford and the Rams wanted each other. Although the Lions got a pair of firsts, the Rams do not have a 2021 first so this likely means they dealt 2022 and 2023 firsts. Additionally, Goff is no sure thing and carries a sizable contract. It’s only guaranteed through the coming 2021 season, so it’s not the end of the world — but it’s still money to take on.
The Lions begin their rebuilding process, while the Rams are pushing all their chips to the center of the table. They have a solid base, and Stafford represents an upgrade from Goff in the short term. Prior to the trade, the Rams opened at DraftKings Sportsbook with +2200 odds to win Super Bowl 56 in 2022. That was tied with the Browns for ninth best. Following the trade, LA has improved to +1100, which is tied with the Buccaneers for third best behind the Chiefs and Packers.
The Rams have also improved to +500 to win the NFC title next season. They are tied with the Bucs behind the +450 Packers. Divisional odds are not yet available, but it’s a good bet LA will top the NFC West. At the moment, the 49ers are +650 to win the NFC, the Seahawks are +1000, and the Cardinals are +2000. The division could be loaded with the 49ers getting healthier and the Cardinals attempting to take another step forward.
