How the public is betting the finalists for the Heisman Trophy

Update 6:30 p.m. Here are the latest odds from DraftKings Sportsbook on the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner with just 30 minutes before the ceremony begins:

DeVonta Smith: -1000
Mac Jones: +700
Trevor Lawrence: +800
Kyle Trask: +5000

Tonight the most cherished individual prize in all of college sports will be handed out as the 2020 Heisman Trophy will be awarded to one of four players, and the odds have shifted heavily to the favorite.

The four finalists are wide receiver DeVonta Smith of Alabama, quarterback Mac Jones of Alabama, quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, and quarterback Kyle Trask of Florida. But the odds have shifted away from Trask pretty far after his loss to LSU to finish the 2020 season, as well as his great game but loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship.

Even though the Heisman Trophy Trust had all 870 voters and 57 players cast their ballot by December 21st. And while some of the voters have, um, questionable college football expertise... (yes, we get the show), DeVonta Smith of Alabama has had the numbers shift towards him.

Heisman voters are asked not to reveal their ballots publicly until after the ceremony, and there’s been some light enforcement of this rule in previous seasons. That should make it harder for handicappers to find out which way the winds are leaning, but that hasn’t stopped the numbers from moving.

Alabama’s DeVonta Smith was just a -200 favorite after the SEC Championship Game, and ballots were due just two days later. His 15 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns, some of them spectacular, for sure left voters with a terrific final impression. But he was just -200 at DraftKings on December 28th. Now on the day of the ceremony, he’s listed as -560 to take home the prize.

It means a lot of voters must be leaking, or Smith’s incredible Rose Bowl is playing a factor in the minds of college football bettors.
