4 defensive players with a chance to win Super Bowl MVP

We take a look at a couple of defensive players both on the Buccaneers and Chiefs to see what are their chances to win Super Bowl 55 MVP.

How Jason Pierre-Paul could end up as the Championship MVP

Super Bowl 55 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers is almost a week away. This game is rematch from Week 12, when the Chiefs defeated the Bucs 27-24 at Raymond James Stadium.

You also have the Chiefs trying to win their second-straight Super Bowl. If Kansas City wants to repeat this feat it will be imperative for them to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes from the opportunistic Buccaneers’ defense. On the other end of the spectrum, the Chiefs’ defense will try to slow down Tom Brady and Buccaneers offense. Brady has won six Super Bowl and four Super Bowl MVPs.

However, it isn’t farfetched to think about a defensive player on one of these teams to win the MVP. Linebackers have the fifth best odds to win at +1200, while defensive backs’ odds are +1800, and defensive lineman +2000. We are going to look at four defensive players who have a chance to win the MVP. All odds are courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.

Devin White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, +4000

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White has the best odds out of all defensive players in Super Bowl 55. The second-year backer has been an absolute stud in the Bucs’ playoff run. White has 26 total tackles, two forced fumbles (playoff-leading), an interception, and a tackle for loss in both of the Bucs’ playoff games.

The young linebacker will likely have to not only deal with Patrick Mahomes, but also Travis Kelce at tight end and whoever may be coming out of the backfield for the Chiefs. If the former LSU standout can create a turnover or have another double-digit tackle performance, then he’ll be in the running for the MVP award.

Shaquil Barrett, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, +5000

If the Bucs want to come away with their second Super Bowl win in franchise history, it will start with their defense getting pressure on Mahomes. In Week 12, Mahomes shredded the Bucs’ defense to the tune of 462 yards, three touchdowns, and was only sacked twice.

Tampa Bay cannot allow that to happen to them because if so, it will be a long game and potential blowout. One player, who can make a difference and wreak havoc is Shaq Barrett. The 28-year-old edge rusher had a solid 2020 season after a record-setting 2019 season that saw him record 19.5 sacks, 37 quarterback hits and six forced fumbles.

In the NFC championship game, Barrett made life tough for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Barrett produced three sacks, five total tackles, two tackles for loss, and four quarterback hits. If Barrett can duplicate this in the Super Bowl, it should give him a solid case to win the MVP, despite lineman odds at +2000.

Tyrann Mathieu, Kansas City Chiefs, +4000

The Honey Badger comes in with the best odds for a Chiefs defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP. The talented safety is all around the field and will be playing mind games with Tom Brady. In their first meeting, Mathieu had five total tackle and an interception.

Thus far in the postseason, the veteran safety has recorded 13 total tackles, a tackle for loss, and an interception. The interception happened in the AFC Divisional round against the Cleveland Browns, which changed the momentum in the second half. If Mathieu were to win the Super MVP, it would be only the third time a safety won the prestigious award.

Frank Clark, Kansas City Chiefs, +7000

Just like with Barrett on the Bucs, Frank Clark could be a difference maker in the Super Bowl next Sunday. The 27-year-old defensive end only had six sacks during the regular season, but made his presence felt in the AFC Championship game against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

In that game, Clark had two sacks, three total tackles, two tackles for loss, and two sacks. Clark has the second-best odds on the Chiefs’ defense to win the Super Bowl 55 MVP, but will need a Super Bowl performance along the lines of Von Miller or Kony Ealy from Super Bowl 50 to secure it.
