There was some big movement in the AP College Basketball Poll this week, and as the field for March Madness is starting to round into shape we can see the Big 12 and Big Ten should have big advantages.
Oklahoma was the biggest mover upwards, based on wins over Kansas, Texas, and Alabama in the last eight days. The Sooners are now 11-4, 6-3 in the Big 12, and have plenty of chances to improve even this high standing with games left against Baylor, West Virginia, and Texas. OU went from No. 24 last week to No. 9 currently.
Ohio State also moved up quickly, picking up wins over Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan State to go from No. 13 to No. 7. The Big Ten is a battle every night, and their two games remaining against Iowa should be huge for the final standings ahead of the conference tournament.
If someone wins, then someone has to lose, and this week that’s Kansas. The Jayhawks were as high as No. 3 in the polls earlier this season, but fall back to No. 23 after losing four of their last five, including an 80-61 blowout by Tennessee on Saturday. At 11-6 and 5-4 in the Big 12, they’re still very likely wearing a white jersey to open the NCAA Tournament. But they’ve dug a hole no one was expecting after finishing 2020 at 8-1 with the only loss to No. 1 Gonzaga.
