The Big One hits Daytona on Lap 15 [VIDEO]

A brutal wreck started at the front of the field and took at least a dozen cars with it.

Just a brutal wreck at the Daytona 500, taking out plenty of cars that had a chance to win the Great American Race today.

It looks like Christopher Bell got Aric Almirola loose on the lower side of the track, and as he headed up to the wall he took plenty of the favorites with him. It looks like Bell is pretty responsible for this, and we’re looking at 184 laps remaining with a big chunk of the field gone.

Aric Almirola, Anthony Alfredo, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher, Kurt Busch, William Byron, Alex Bowman, Matt DiBenedetto, Erik Jones, Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Tyler Reddick, David Ragan, Daniel Suarez, and Martin Truex Jr., are all involved. We’ll start to sort out who has damage that means they can’t return, and who will get back on the track shortly.

The race is now in a weather delay due to lightning within three miles of Daytona International Speedway, and that means teams can’t work on their wrecked cars until the red flag is lifted. So we’ve got a lot of twisted metal just sitting out there unable to be touched for repairs.
