No. 1 Gonzaga has been the most dominant team in college basketball this season, and will look to improve to 21-0 on the season against St. Mary’s on Thursday. The Bulldogs took care of business the last time they faced their WCC rivals, but can they sweep the regular-season series as the year winds down? Let’s take a look at the two teams.
Gonzaga (20-0, 11-0) is the only undefeated Division I team in the country. It has the most productive scoring offense in the NCAA with an average of 93 points per game. The Bulldogs’ firepower has helped them outscore opponents by an average of 23.7 points per game. Forwards Drew Timme and Corey Kispert both average more than 19 points per game, while rookie sensation Jalen Suggs chips in with 14.2 points per contest while leading the team in steals. All three of them got going in Gonzaga’s big win over Saint Mary’s earlier this season.
Saint Mary’s (11-6, 2-4) is coming off a narrow loss to Pepperdine from Saturday but won the two games it played before that. It’s a down year for Randy Bennett’s team that’s often the bridesmaid in the WCC, but they still rank 34th in adjusted defensive efficiency and recover 78.9% of rebounds defensively.
